The previous year we saw Hackers winning $215,000 for hacking iPhone 6S and Nexus 6P. Well, in 2017 Pwn2Own hacking contest began on March 15. Pwn2Own was sponsored by the security firm Trend Micro. You will feel good to know that Pwn2Own hacking contest saw some major hacks and awards worth $233,000 in Prize money. Well, this year’s Pwn2Own hacking contest also marks the 10th year of this hacking competition. Ubuntu Linux 16.10 along with Microsoft Edge, Adobe Reader, and Apple safari was hacked in the competition. The Qihoo 360’s team earned $50,000 reward for targeting Adobe Reader using a jpeg2000 heap overflow, a Windows kernel info leak, and an RCE. Hackers Samuel Groß and Niklas Baumstark earned $28,000 by targeting Apple Safari with an escalation to root on MacOS. The hacker team combined different vulnerabilities resulting in arbitrary code execution as root on Apple’s MacOS. Tencent Security’s Team earned $80,000 for attacking Microsoft Edge. The team used an arbitrary write in Chakra Core and used the second bug to escape the browser’s sandbox. Well, even the open source Linux desktop was hacked by Chaitin Security Research Lab. Researchers demonstrated a kernel privilege escalation on Ubuntu Desktop that earned them $15,000.
